Robert Bell’s Report pp. 294-342

The download is a large one – 48.5 Mb. The Report submitted by Bell begins on page 294 and is 48 pages long. One odd note – the title! it reads –
REPORT ON AN
EXPLORATION IN 1865 BETWEEN
JAMES’ BAY AND LAKES SUPERIOR AND HURON, BY
ROBERT BELL, C.E., F.G.S.,
While the GSC was founded in 1842 so it is possible that Bell was producing a report for it in 1865. it may just be a typesetter’s error. The fact that in his report he mentions naming a lake after the Governor-General Lord Dufferin’s wife would seem to support a date of 1875 since Dufferin was G-G from 1872 to 1878. In 1865 he – and his wife – were relative unknowns in Canada and would not have been names that a surveyor would have picked out of the name bag of Empire to grace a lake.
More research is required – but until then, I assume 1865 is a typesetter’s error!
